Leave the comfort zone!
Hi, my name is Vinicius, I am from the Innovation Department and in the previous post I wrote a little bit about how you can practice innovation. In this text, I would like to retrieve this subject taking a deep dive into an essential behavior for innovation to happen, which is leaving the comfort zone. This is included in the 10 InterCement Attitudes, when we say “Permanently challenge yourself”. This is the ability that many leaders and entrepreneurs show and which you can also have, that is trying the unknown, being bold in your actions, taking risks despite the outcomes not being clear, having hope and the desire to discover are the main characteristics of this behavior. Being brave and bold to raise doubts about absolute truths and find new paths.
This is not surprising, is it? The point is how to do it. Following new paths demands a lot of effort, it requires many new actions, developing abilities that we don`t have, talking to people we don`t know, being bold, and taking the risk of failing. Keep doing what we have been doing is much more appealing, but the issue arises when that turns out to be not enough anymore, either because we are under threat or because we need outcomes that are better than the current one. Another motivation for getting out of your cozy bed and look for adventures has to do with the hero`s journey, in which your focus is on learning, on how the contact with new things have changed you and made you evolve, when the goal is in the own path and learning. And this motivation can take you to the magical land. You can see, for example, Magazine Luiza, which is never contented with its status quo and challenges itself all the time to change and recreate the company. This reminds me of a picture that represents some states of discovery. It basically crosses the levels of consciousness and knowledge, describing 3 ways of thinking:
- I know that I know
This is the pure state of the comfort zone. I have already mastered the processes, actions, I know people, everything is “normal”, there are no surprises or considerable changes.
- I know that I don`t know
Here we are in the zone of the visibly possible. We can see everything that we can make in a different way, we are aware that there is knowledge to acquire, and trying is a choice. Do you remember that course that you have been planning to take, but have been procrastinating instead? How about that trip? Or calling that friend?
- I don`t know that I don`t know
This is the kingdom of opportunities! A world of knowledge of which we are unaware and do not know we can use them. We usually face these challenges suddenly, when a friend invites us to go to a new pub, or travel with many people you had never met before, or practice a different sport, well you already got the idea.
Again, taking these new experiences only depend on us, we create many obstacles in order not to leave the comfort zone, but we must resist this inertial laziness if we would like to take a selfie in front of an amazing waterfall, meet the perfect partner, and make friends every weekend. It only depends on us. And the best of all is that as we try the unknown, uncomfortable things become easy, there is no problem if you cannot detach yourself from your comfort zone, just focus on increasing it, it only takes a little bit of effort for everything to become comfortable 😉
5 things you can do at InterCement to leave the comfort zone!
As you can read in Daniel Pink`s book Drive, mastery is one of the pillars that motivate us, the willingness to be better than we are now drives us to learn new things, so do not miss the opportunity to be better, either when you are trying to kick a crucial penalty in the soccer game or when you are doing a public presentation, these uncomfortable situations will prepare you for important moments in the future.
Having this in mind, I would like to share a list of five things that you can do at InterCement to leave the comfort zone:
- When somebody asks “Who wants to be the first?” – be the first.
- Talk to someone from a foreign country.
- Invite someone you don`t know for lunch.
- Get acquainted with a department that you have no idea how it operates.
- Visit a customer.
This post is a bit long, but I hope it was useful.
